On March 4th, the US Navy was detonating an explosive during a routine amphibious and tactical warfare training procedure just off the coast of Coronado at the Silver Strand Training Complex which resulted in the deaths of at least three dolphins. The strict procedure of the Navy during explosives training has a radius of 0.5 to 1.0 mile of ocean spread that is monitored for aquatic life such as dolphins, whales, seals, and other large underwater animals. Unfortunately, three long-beaked common dolphins were found dead and were reported to the fisheries service. It was confirmed that the dolphins had suffered blast trauma from the training exercise. Also, it’s being investigated if the death of two additional dolphins found in Oceanside and La Jolla were related to the Navy training session.

Although the long-beaked common dolphins are not endangered, the estimated population of 15,000 along California’s coast is an integral part of our oceanic life. Long-beaked common dolphins are protected under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, which gives refuge to larger oceanic creatures.

The US Navy has reasoned that the area had been approved and was clear of animal activity until the operation was too far along to stop without putting humans into serious risk. Even so, the Natural Resources Defense Council is requesting a further investigation of the Navy training incident and proposes a temporary suspension of more explosives training until the case is resolved. The Navy’s application for permission to utilize underwater explosives would expect an annual dissemination of 415 detonations a year. Even with the suspension of training procedures, the Navy has decided to continue with training in the Coronado and Imperial Beach areas.
