Make your Apartment Feel more like Home

March 11, 2011

There’s no place like home. When you’re living in a pre-furnished apartment, it’s difficult to personalize your space or make any permanent changes. But alas, there are ways to modify your apartment on a budget and make the space feel like your own. Here are 5 tips to customize your pad:

1. Pick up flowers or a low-maintenance plant
Adding greenery to your living space is a great way to personalize your place. Plants not only give off energy, they actually make you feel better and improve your health. It’s possible to buy a plant at any local floral shop or home improvement center or stop by the Imperial Beach’s farmer’s market today from 2-7:30 pm to pick out a floral bouquet.

2. Hang pictures or posters
Adding some graphics to your walls and countertops can really add a personal touch. Get creative and show off a bit of your personality through unique posters. Also having some photos of friends and family can really make you feel more at home. Visit online poster stores to directly order items or just get ideas.

3. Rearrange furniture
Although your apartment may be pre-furnished, it’s always a possibility that your furniture could be set up in another way that will better satisfy your tastes. Rearranging furniture can open up more space, transform the overall “feel” of your apartment, and make it more aesthetically pleasing. Feng Shui is a Chinese methodology that is used to create balance and harmony within homes by rearranging furniture; try out some different set-ups and choose a furniture placement that resonates with you.

4. Accent rooms with colorful accessories
Add some color to any room through accessories such as accent pillows, blankets, or towels—to name a few. An extra dose of color can really brighten up the room and even enhance your mood. Spice up your color scheme and really tune in to your own style.

5. Add more lighting
Even an extra lamp or brighter bulb can open up the space. You can purchase an inexpensive, funky light at your local Ikea or any large retail store.
