The wife of the Commander Colby Howard, Adrienne Howard, was one of the guests invited to the State of the Union Address by the First Lady Michelle Obama. The San Diego Navy wife has had a successful military career of her own, providing help and support to many military organizations throughout the years. Adrienne Howard’s contributions to Joining Forces, the initiative created by Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, has helped many veterans and active military troops.

In addition to her aid to Joining Forces, Howard has also been a volunteer for almost 2 decades in family readiness groups and military spouse organizations. Adrienne Howard has also started her own program called “Adopt a Sailor” for her husband’s ship USS Dewey that is stationed in San Diego. Adrienne has brought about 80 people and organizations to become a part of the “Adopt a Sailor” program by writing to sailors aboard USS Dewey.

The San Diego Navy wife has moved 14 times within her husband’s 20-year career with the U.S. Navy. Her dedication to the military and her volunteer efforts within military organizations made her the perfect candidate to attend the State of the Union Address on Tuesday night. The down-to-earth military wife was one of 23 guests of the first lady. Many invitations to sit in the first lady’s box during the speech are given to individuals that illustrate key points of the president’s speech.

Adrienne Howard said she was excited and happy to have to opportunity to represent the volunteers of Navy and military organizations that are dedicated to helping sailors on a daily basis. Howard noted in a phone interview that: “Listening to the speech and being in the same room with all of our government leaders was absolutely incredible. It was particularly special getting to see Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and getting to meet President Obama.”

For Adrienne Howard, a San Diego local and huge contributor to military organizations, the invitation to the State of the Union speech was an honor and very special opportunity that will fuel her further contributions to her own program “Adopt a Sailor” along with all other military support programs.
