If you want to get away from San Diego for a day, slip into San Diego’s secret desert to experience the 46th annual Borrego Days Festival in Borrego Springs. This desert fest isn’t quite like any other traditional festival—it goes above and beyond. Beginning at 6:30 a.m. for breakfast and ending late in the evening around 9 p.m. with inductions and the Miss Borrego Springs Pageant, the day is filled with out-of-this-world activities including helicopter rides, a mini-carnival, skydivers, a motorcycle and car show and much more. And, if you didn’t get your fix of Borrego Springs in one day, pitch a tent and stay the night or come back the next day. The Borrego Springs festival will take place from Friday to Sunday with free admission every day.
Saturday, October 22: Dia de los Muertos Celebration and German Currents San Diego Film Festival
Little Italy’s Mexican retail shop is anything but bland—their colorful selection of handmade gifts, art, and décor from many regions of Mexico fill their cute boutique with lively merchandise and great gifts for any friend or occasion. Celebrate with Casa Artelexia for their 2nd annual Day of the Dead celebration also known as Dia de los Muertos. From 6 to 9 p.m., this beautiful shop will open its doors offering a community altar, music, entertainment, tequila tastings, a food truck, and sugar skull decorating. Don’t miss this fantastic event and support a local shop that takes retailing to the next level.
Another culture will be celebrating this Saturday in San Diego. The German Currents San Diego Film Festival will kick off its upscale event at the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Theatre in the Museum of Photographic Arts located in the always-gorgeous Balboa Park. The 226-seat theatre will provide a great screening area to show German award-winning productions. The Gala opening night and reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. with Almanya – Willkommen in Deutschland, directed by Yasemin Samdereli. Open your eyes to different cultural perspectives that will force you to see reality through another cultural lens. And don’t worry, these German films will be shown with English subtitles! Admission to opening night is $25 and tickets may be purchased online through Brown Paper tickets.
Sunday, October 23: Step Out San Diego Walk in Mission Bay and Nature Walk through Silver Strand State Beach
Rest up Saturday night because Sunday could be a very intense exercise day if you plan on joining San Diego’s efforts to support the American Diabetes Association at Step Out San Diego Walk to Stop Diabetes. The 10.4 mile walk starts early at the De Anza Cove in Mission Bay with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. followed by the walk at 8:30 a.m. For additional information about how to register for the walk, volunteer around the event, or just support with donations, please visit the American Diabetes Association website for all details pertaining to the San Diego Diabetes Walk.
But maybe the 10.4 mile diabetes walk sounds like a great cause to get involved with but perhaps the distance is too much to bear this weekend. If you still feel like going for a hike or a walk and wish to be outdoors, San Diego’s Silver Strand State beach in Coronado will be hosting an hour-long walking tour from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Discover the area’s most prominent birds, animals and plants that inhabit these parts of our San Diego region. The guided tour will meet at the lifeguard headquarters with binoculars and hand lenses for better examination of birds and animals from afar.
