FRIDAY November 18th “Bach, Baroque, and All that Jazz” in Coronado & Motown at Humphrey’s
Are you ready for a jazzy Bach-inspired night of music? The Coronado Performing Arts Center is pleased to host its “Bach, Baroque, and All that Jazz” featuring the Orchestra Nova. See the relationship that Bach and Baroque music have with today’s jazz music. A few surprise Beatles songs in the mix create the perfect pairing of interesting music. Come early and start the Nova Experience at 6 p.m. The orchestra will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission will run between $26-$36.
If Bach and jazz don’t tickle your fancy, get down to the soulful sounds of the Detroit Underground. This Motown 9-person group will be filling Humphrey’s Backstage Club with funky rhythms and some of the best female and male vocals you’ve ever heard! For just $12, come see the lively group called Detroit Underground and dance all night long at Point Loma’s swankiest music venue.
SATURDAY November 19th La Jolla Shores’ Urban Kid Surf Event & Gorilla Challenge at the Hard Rock Café
Watch local kids surf La Jolla Shores at this special event Urban Surf 4 Kids. The surf camp allows foster children in the San Diego community to try out a new sport and experience something new. The 3 to 4 hour surf camp includes lessons, lunch, and games. Volunteers are needed to help in the November 19th surf camp starting at 12:45 p.m. If you don’t know how to surf but still want to volunteer, volunteers are also needed to play volleyball, build sandcastles, and hang out with the kids while they are at the beach. You have got to try the Gorilla Challenge at the Hard Rock Café in Downtown San Diego. San Diego Youth Services and the Gorilla Challenge will be partnering up to put on an “Amazing Race” style event mixed with elements of “Fear Factor” and “American Idol.” Each team will have to race around the city solving clues and completing outrageous and silly activities to get new clues. Win the grand prize of $300 or receive mini prizes along the way! The event will also give away prizes for the best costumes too! Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the race will start promptly at 11 a.m. Have a blast getting crazy with your friends, support San Diego Youth Services, and win some prizes. Registration fee is $60/person.
SUNDAY November 20th Learn to Cook Vegan & A Swedish Film Festival
Evolution Fast Food, a 100 percent vegan restaurant in Hillcrest, would like to share healthy cooking secrets with the San Diego community. For just $15, learn how to cook using vegan products and enjoy your meal afterwards. Chef Adi’El calls her cooking style “meditative vegan food experimentation” and is offering the public a full view of her cooking techniques and secrets. Try something new and see what the vegan lifestyle really tastes.
From 1 to 4:30 p.m., get swept away to Sweden during the FREE Swedish Film Festival at San Diego State University’s Wiik Auditorium. The Swedish Center San Diego-sponsored event will feature four Swedish films focusing on the overall theme of global migration preceding a panel discussion. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11: FLUXX’s Patriotic Ball & Del Mar’s Snow Jam
Get ready for a Veteran’s Day Celebration at the hot new San Diego club scene this Friday at FLUXX. From 6 to 9 p.m., FLUXX wants to raise awareness of San Diego’s homeless veteran dilemma; the soldiers that fought for our country are ending up on the streets with no place to go. Five non-profit organizations will be accepting a $15 donation at the door in order to support and give thanks to our veterans that are in such dire need. The Caridad Foundation, Veterans Village, UPLIFT Triple Cross, and many others will be benefiting from your donations so make a difference while getting your groove on! The red, white, and blue patriotic theme will be hosting a cocktail hour complete with hors d’oeuvres, auction/raffle prizes, and a chance to meet Uncle Sam himself! Have a ball at FLUXX’s veteran benefit and help our homeless veterans that need our help now more than ever.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12: OB’s Urban Adventure Race & A Pink Martini Performance
Cross Fit Ocean Beach is proud to host the Ocean Beach Urban Adventure Race that will have participants racing about the Ocean Beach area with an OB map in hand and a partner to scurry their way to the finish line. Starting at 10:30 a.m. at Cross Fit Ocean Beach, the race will be explained in detail before the teams race through the town in search of destinations… teams will earn raffle tickets along the way for prize raffles at the end. Each team has to meet back at the CFOB with the tickets entered into the pool to be eligible to win prizes from many local businesses and sponsors located in the OB area. This event was set up by CFOB to benefit the Episcopal Community Service of Ocean Beach’s Domestic Violence Program. Registration is only $25 so enter today and get ready to race around the laid-back beach community of Ocean Beach.
If you’re into modern lounge music, get swept away by the 12-piece musical performance of Portland, Oregon’s fresh and inspiring group called Pink Martini. This band has traveled all around the world from Asia, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Canada, and throughout the United States in order to let the world hear their eclectic lounge tunes. The founder of the group, Thomas M. Lauderdale, was a Harvard graduate and a profound pianist whom is set to deliver a distinct musical message along with raising awareness for political and environmental causes. This group will amaze you from start to finish—catch their San Diego show at the historic Balboa Theatre for a life-changing concert experience. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13: Sezio Indie Concert & Silver Strand’s Half Marathon
Catch the last of San Diego’s four-day weekend event this Sunday featuring one of the best Indie bands that has popped up on the music scene. For quite some time, San Diego has been dying to book a live performance with the New Jersey-based group called Real Estate. The folk-pop group will be performing this Sunday at 8 p.m. at an all ages event. For just $10, the Indie show will emphasize just how amazing this group of musicians is at North Park’s Sunset Temple location. Definitely a show you wouldn’t want to miss!
And if you didn’t get enough exercise racing about Ocean Beach on Saturday, the IB 12th annual Silver Strand Half Marathon and 5K has returned to the Coronado and Imperial Beach area. Run, walk, or skate along the Silver Strand in this fun walk/run event at 7:30 a.m. The course is open to all willing participants and will be a nice change from last Sunday’s stormy weather.
