San Diego is known for its gorgeous weather, surfing subculture, and beautiful beaches. Here is your insider peek at San Diego’s most popular beach towns.
Imperial Beach
Imperial Beach is known as San Diego’s hidden beach because it isn’t as popular as other San Diego beach hot spots. But it is one of the more beautiful beaches with a charming atmosphere. The spectacular view of the Las Coronado Islands is unbelievable. Also deemed the best beach for sandcastles, Imperial Beach hosts the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition.
Coronado Beach
Wanna get away? Relax and enjoy San Diego’s fantastic island and Coronado’s beach community. It’s the ideal weekend getaway. Coronado feels like an Island village, surrounded by the San Diego Bay and Pacific Ocean. Coronado is perfect for swimming, sailing, surfing, biking, running, walking, tennis, golf, and many other outdoor activities. Coronado is the perfect beach to exercise at or just take the kids to soak up some sun.
Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach will take you back to the ‘70s. Also know as OB, the hippie attitude feels really inviting and the cliffs right after the pier are a great place to sit and watch the sunset. If you go further, you will come across Sunset Cliffs on the south end which is a great place to hike or just explore. The beach extends for about ½ mile until it meets at the popular dog beach on the north side. Overall, this beach will make you wish you were still a flower child.
Mission Beach
Whether you’re looking to take a stroll along the 3 ½ mile boardwalk, people watch, lend a hand in a beach volleyball match or ride the famous Giant Dipper rollercoaster in Belmont Park, Mission Beach is the central San Diegan beach that will satisfy all your needs. The boardwalk is famous for its traditional, long paved walkway that people from all over flock to. The rollercoaster at Belmont Park is a must-see for any visitor.
Pacific Beach
Pacific Beach has a fantastic sandy beach that has been known for its college crowd parties and wild nightlife. The main streets of PB are great for shopping with the girls or going out at night with a group of friends.
La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores
La Jolla village is known for its exquisite lifestyle and lavish La Jolla village. La Jolla Cove is a smaller beach with tidepools and a cave! Go visit the Cove when the tide is low so you can walk down and explore and tiny nook of San Diego’s beaches. La Jolla Shores is a long, flat beach that is perfect for running, jogging, or just taking a romantic walk in the sand.
Del Mar Beach
Del Mar, famous for its racetrack, has been able to keep a more rural feel to its town but has also created its own beach atmosphere—if you visit the River Mouth in the morning, you might catch jockeys exercising the horses from the Del Mar racetrack. For a picturesque beach landscape that runs right up to residents’ backyards, visit Del Mar.
