The U.S. Navy has officially canceled all of the remaining Blue Angels performances for the year 2013. The increasingly popular Blue Angels squadron will also be missing from the annual Miramar Air Show in San Diego as a result of budget cuts.
The phenomenal group called the Blue Angels is comprised of 16 Navy officers that volunteer to be a part of the program. The team is selected annually and typically performs with three fighter or fighter/attack jet pilots, two supporting officers, and one Marines Corps C-130 pilot. The additional flight pilots are used to relieve officers that may be on deployment.
The Blue Angels certainly put on a show complete with airplane tricks, incredible flight skills, and special jets that are fun to watch. However, these sensational performances can no longer be supported by the government for our viewing pleasure.
The Blue Angels have always been a part of the Miramar Air Show, yet this year will be different. According to Lt. Tyler Balzer of the Miramar Public Affairs Office, the Marine Air-Ground Task Force will be more involved this year than in the past.
Lt. Aaron V. Kakiel, the Assistant Public Affairs Officer for the Commander of the Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, opened up to the public: “Recognizing budget realities, current defense policy states that outreach events can only be supported with local assets at no cost to the government. This is one of many steps the Navy is taking to ensure resources are in place to support forces operating forward now and those training to relieve them.â€
The Miramar Air Show will take place October 4 to October 6. The Marine Corps will showcase their talents at the annual show, a unique twist from usual air shows in Miramar. Stay tuned for more details on the show line-up.
